October 14, 1921 - May 5, 2012
Hey, Tiger!
Al left us with dignity and grace on May 5, 2012. He is survived by his daughter June Lovotti Errico, son-in-law Dr. Anthony Errico, son Gary Lovotti, daughter-in-law Vicki Lovotti, grandsons, Dr. Jason Errico and Nick Errico, brother Albert (Babe) Lovotti, niece Linda Van Rees (Cordell), niece Nancy Carney (Pat), nephew Steve Lovotti (Dr. Pam DiTomasso-Lovotti), sister-in-law Utahna Smith, sister-in-law Kay Rose, brother-in-law Joe Benson, and an overwhelming number of extended family and lifelong friends. Preceded in death by his 'girl' - wife, Bonnie Lovotti, parents Silvio and Maria Lovotti, and sister-in-law Bette Lovotti.
Al's mother, Maria, was pregnant with him when they emigrated from Italy in the 1920's and he was born in Stockton, CA. His parents then moved to San Francisco and that is where he grew up. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Al met his best friend - Bonnie - in 1945, in San Francisco, and they married in Parowan, Utah at her parent's home in 1947. During their early marriage they owned and managed a boarding house and grocery stores in the city. During that time they expanded their family to include a daughter and son. In 1958, Al and Bonnie - with children in tow and in partnership with Al's brother Babe and his wife Bette - took a leap of faith by moving to Sacramento and founding Lovotti Brother's Distributing Company. Lovotti Brother's became a large wholesale wine distributorship in Northern California and thrived for over 45 years.
Al had the most wonderful relationship with his grandsons, Jason and Nick and their friends, avidly supported every sporting and school event in which they participated, and amused them to no end with his tales. They were proud he was their Nonno.
He sat on the Board of Mercy Foundation for over 20 years and developed lasting and wonderful relationships with many of the Sisters of Mercy and cherished their friendship. Al was a Past President, Social Director, and Board Member of the Dante Club for many, many years. He was also a member of Piemonte Reale and Knights of Columbus.
He traveled many times to Italy to visit family and had the opportunity to see China, Africa, Samoa, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Alaska, and other reaches around the world. As Al always said, 'I've had a pretty good life.'
