Alfred Dunkl

Born March 5, 1933. Died June 10 2012 after a brief illness at his home surrounded by family and loved ones.

Alfred grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota born to Marie Poetl and Charles Dunkl who emigrated from Austria. He pursued his two greatest passions, sports and music. He was a true athlete competing in wrestling, hockey, basketball and his true love, baseball. He earned a spot as a semi-professional in the minor leagues for the Minnesota Twins before joining the Marines in 1952 to serve his country. His love of sports led to coaching Little League Intramural and softball teams. Al was an accomplished musician playing both piano and accordion. He worked as a machinist and auto mechanic early in his life and later pursued a sales career for Classic Cabinets of West Sacramento, California where he worked for many years.

“Freddie” moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona in 1971 and then to Sacramento, California in 1976 where he resided until his death.

He was a loving husband and father whose devotion to family was extraordinary .He worshipped his wife of 57 years, Geraldine LaHood Dunkl and adored his children. His love for people was not limited to his own family. He brought many stray people and animals into his home for sanctuary over the years.

Alfred is survived by his wife Geraldine Ann Dunkl and his six children: Theresa Armstrong of Sacramento CA, Michael Dunkl of Rio Linda, CA Beverly Heroux of Elk Grove, CA (Mike Dowd), James Dunkl of Kalispell MT, Thomas Dunkl of Yuba City CA (Gail Dunkl) and Angel Franklin of Weaverville, CA (Gerald Brewer).Alfred also has 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and is survived by many nieces and nephews as well as 2 sister- in- laws. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Mary Dunkl Burda and Margaret “Margie” Dunkl Martin.

Services will be held Thursday June 14 at Nicoletti Culjis and Herberger Funeral Home 5401 Folsom Blvd Sacramento CA 95819.Visitation at 10AM. Memorial Service at 11AM. Graveside service immediately following at Camellia Memorial Lawn 10221 Jackson Rd CA 95827
