Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Allan Mar, a long time resident of Sacramento passed away peacefully April 25, 2017 at the age of 89. Allan was born May 3, 1927 to Thomas and Ella Mar of nearby Locke, California. Allan grew up with four siblings, Brenda, Marie, Evelyn, and Delbert. Throughout his childhood and into his adolescent years, Allan worked long hours on a local pear farm while also participating in baseball, basketball, and football at Courtland High School.
After graduating from high school in 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. When he returned from the war, Allan enrolled at Sacramento City College where he met his wife of 65 years, Betty (Quan) Mar. After graduating from the then Sacramento State College, Allan and Betty eventually settled in South Land Park with their four sons Wesley, Douglas, Richard, and Dean. Allan was a longtime Sacramento grocer and while working for Jumbo Market in Dixon, was dubbed “the happy grocer” by the Dixon Tribune. When he wasn’t working, Allan enjoyed playing golf with his wife Betty and their friends at Bing Maloney Golf Course and Elkhorn Country Club.
In his later years, Allan enjoyed spending time working in his yard and going on walks--stopping to chat with his neighbors or visiting Marie’s Donuts for a maple bar. However, his greatest joy came from his grandchildren Nicholas, 24, Kendall, 22, Tyler, 17, and Reagan, 12. He spent countless hours babysitting, cooking, and attending all athletic (Land Park Pacific Little League, Sutter Middle School, C.K. McClatchy High School) and extracurricular events.
Allan had an infectious smile that brightened every room and he always saw the positive in every situation. He was an incredibly selfless man who continuously put others before himself. He was extremely loved by all of his family, and will be missed by all of those who knew him.
