On January 1, 2023, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother Barbara Haviland passed away at the age of 91. She was a selfless caregiver to her late husband (Clifford) and to their six amazing children (Mary, Theresa, John, Virginia, Michael, and Chris).
Barbara was born in Sacramento on July 11, 1931, predeceased by parents Florence and Ambrose Johnson.
Faith was paramount in Barbara’s life. Her children attended All Hallows Parish School and she was devoted to giving back to the congregation. She helped originate the All Hallows Mothers Club Queen for a Day initiative and established a local Girl Scout Troop, where she served as Troop Leader.
Barbara volunteered at multiple organizations until her passing. Some of her favorite ways to volunteer were to support the Sacramento Public Library and counting the weekly monetary donations to Saint Peters/All Hallows Catholic Church. She spent many hundreds of hours creating bonds with her fellow counters who all shared a love for the church.
If you have ever been to a Haviland celebration, you know Barbara’s baking was perfection. She was known to bake cakes and cookies for school functions, birthday treats, decadent wedding cakes, and more. She welcomed everyone to her kitchen and passed her baking talent down to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Her unwavering curiosity was an integral part of her drive to learn and explore the world. She had a passion for traveling; most Christmas’ you would find her on a Sports Leisure Travel mystery trip enjoying the company of friends and family in different cities across the United States. Barbara was also a professional cruiser and set sail to explore ports around the globe alongside her family.
From a young age, she loved to learn. She attended Newton Booth Elementary, California Middle School, and C.K. McClatchy High School, where she was a member of the drill team. Barbara graduated from Heald Business College and began a career as a secretary. She later met her husband, Clifford, while working at the Division of Highways and the two lived a full and happy life together.
Her legacy will live on forever, not just by her family members but by all who were fortunate enough to spend time with her and knew her generosity, side-splitting humor and tremendous, unconditional love.
While her passing has been difficult, we know she is at peace now that she has joined the love of her life, Clifford, and her daughter, Theresa Weaver, in Heaven.
Barbara is survived by her children Mary, John (Linda), Virginia (Larry), Michael (Dori), Christopher, and son-in-law Rob Weaver, along with many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her family would like to express gratitude to the many health care staff members at Mercy General Hospital and is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, the community, and the organizations Barbara was so passionate about. The amount of support is a testament to the profound impact she had on this world.
Catholic Mass will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 10 a.m., Saint Peter-All Hallows’ Parish, 5501 14th Avenue, Sacramento, CA. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
