He is survived by his brother Dr. James William Hopkins (Nancy); four children: Ann Marie Beach (John), Mary Hopkins Kelley, Dr. Stephen James Hopkins (Anne Marie), and Dr. Robert Jay Hopkins (Joyce); fifteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Each carries forward a part of Don’s legacy—his love for learning, compassion for others, and unwavering devotion to family.
Don was preceded in death by Rita Ann (Langford) Hopkins, his loving and devoted wife. Their bond was one of enduring partnership and shared purpose—a foundation upon which their family grew strong.
Born on June 10, 1931, in Walnut, Illinois, Don lived a life marked by dedication—to his faith, family, profession, and community. His journey began in the heartland of America and led him to academic and professional excellence. He graduated from Northwestern University and its Medical School before completing advanced training in General, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic—an achievement that reflected both his intellect and commitment to healing.
Following his surgical residency and fellowship, Don served with honor at the Chelsea Naval Base in Massachusetts. His service was a testament to his sense of duty and patriotism. After completing his military service, he continued to serve others during his 40-year surgical practice in Sacramento.
Don and Rita made Sacramento their home for over 50 years. In addition to his professional contributions as a surgeon, he found joy and peace on his small farm where he lovingly cared for sheep and horses. Tending the land was not just a pastime but a reflection of his nurturing spirit and appreciation for life’s simple blessings.
A devout Christian, Don was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Sacramento. His faith was central to who he was—guiding his actions and inspiring those around him. Whether through quiet acts of kindness or steadfast support for those in need, Don's generosity touched countless lives.
Dr. Donald M. Hopkins will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for the warmth he brought to every person he touched, the strength of his convictions, and the deep love he held for those closest to him.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire lives rooted in faith, family, service and love.
