

A native of Montclair, New Jersey, born November 24, 1912, passed away in Sacramento, April 25, 2012 at the age of 99 years. He is survived by his children Janice Anne Brewer (Ralph) and John T. Nickens III (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Rhett Brewer and Monique Brewer, and Jonathan Nickens (Ria); great-grandchildren, Ryan, Natalie and Chase; and brother, Lloyd Nickens (Ida), and nephews Lloyd and Norm. His wife of 60 yrs, Camille, passed away in 2001. John, a devoted husband, father and friend, attended Montclair High School and graduated from the Newark College of Engineering in 1937 as the first African-American licensed civil engineer in the State. He worked as an engineer for 40 years first with private companies during WWII, then with the New Jersey State Highway Department. John also was an avid musician since age nine, playing in orchestras and bands both in New Jersey and in the Sacramento area for some eighty years. Friends are invited for visitation Friday, May 4, 2012 from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M., both being held at St. Anne Catholic Church, 7724 24th St., Sacramento, CA 95832. Interment to follow, St. Mary's Cemetery. Donations may be made to Capitol Pops Band Student Scholarship Fund 7900 Via Roma Dr. Fair Oaks CA 95628.
