

She is survived by daughter Carol Ann Updegraff, grandson Joseph Updegraff (Stacey), great-grandsons Jonathan and Michael Updegraff, granddaughter Chelsie Chan (Wilson), and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Josephine was born and raised in the Sacramento Delta and resided on Sutter Island for 70 years with her husband Nello (deceased), cared for her parents Guiseppe and Giorgia Fava (deceased) and raised her two children, Richard (deceased) and Carol Ann.
Josephine and Nello were married in April of 1945 just before Nello was discharged from the Army. They lived in Hood, on Sherman Island, and then eventually lived the rest of their lives on Sutter Island. They enjoyed fishing, gardening, preserving, and having their two grandchildren spend summers with them.
Josephine was active in PTA at Bates School, volunteered with the Well Baby Clinic in the 1960s, and worked at the Courtland Market for multiple years. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in Walnut Grove where she belonged to the St. Anthony’s Altar Society, frequently helped with bake sales, set ups for the Crab Feeds, sewed Nuns’ habits, and transported many neighbors’ children to catechism studies on Saturday mornings.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Nello, her son Richard, her son-in-law Daniel (Carol Ann), and sister Bruna Fava Quilici (Henry).
Services will be held at St. Anthony’s Church on Tuesday, July 13th at 10:30 a.m. with a lunch reception following at the church hall. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. Donations in her name can be made to the St. Anthony’s Altar Society, St. Anthony’s Church, 14012 Walnut Avenue, Walnut Grove, CA 95690.
