Sidney “Sid” Eugene Anderson, a longtime resident of Rancho Murieta, California born on September 12,1932 in Lincoln Nebraska, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer's disease on July 5, 2023 at his home with his wife and children.
He grew up in Nebraska, graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and later attended Nebraska Wesleyan before enlisting in the Air Force in 1953. He became a navigator and then a pilot and loved flying. He was the last Commander of the 84th Squadron of the C-133 Cargomaster plane. On March 17,1971 he flew the last flight of the plane to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (AFB) in Tucson, Arizona. He served at Danang AFB in Vietnam as Base Commander from 1971-1972 and retired as Lt. Colonel after 21 years of service. Before retiring, he was asked to attend the War College in Washington D.C. but decided to make his hobby of investing his second career with Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor for 20 years.
In 1959, he met the love of his life, Shirley Westerberg, in San Francisco and they were married September 15,1962 in Monterey, CA. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage with four loving children - Susan (husband Frank Rockwood), Sid Jr (wife Fiona), Sharon (husband Rob Wagner) and Steve (wife Jennifer) and five grandchildren - Moniq, Sarah, Mary, Zachary and Aubrielle. They embarked on many adventures together going on cruises, 20 Final Fours, the Kentucky Derby, seeing Tiger Woods win a golf tournament at St Andrews in Scotland, and many trips to Europe, Hawaii and Palm Desert.
Sid will be remembered for his pride and valor of his military career, his professional success and unwavering love and devotion to his family. He was a man of character, determination, strong values and incredible work ethics, leaving a legacy of love, resilience and a life well lived.
His children fondly remember all his wisdom and advice - ‘pay yourself first’, ‘a family that works together stays together’, ‘don’t be afraid to ask for the order’, ‘always tell the truth’, ‘be accountable for your actions’, ‘keep up or pick up’ (golfing), ‘drive for show and putt for dough’ (golfing), ‘be a defensive driver’ and many more.
As a family, we are deeply saddened by our loss but are comforted knowing he passed peacefully. He will be forever loved, greatly missed and we are grateful to God for him. We also want to thank all the wonderful people who helped care for him, including Erin Reed, Carlye Reed, Dawid Hudziak and Andi Passmore.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Rancho Murieta on Thursday, August 17 at 3 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life in the church hall. There will be a private interment at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
