Doris Louise (nee Metze) Love, 98, formerly of Ferguson, MO Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at The Quarters in Des Peres. Born at home with amid-wife on July 17, 1917 to John and Lavina Metze in St. Louis, MO, she had a much older brother and a sister 16 years her senior.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew Jackson Love, Jr.; a brother, Robert W. Metze; a sister, Lucille Metze; and a son, John Andrew Love. Doris is survived by her son, Phillip C. (Kathy) Love; daughter, Peggy L. (John) Garavaglia; son, Robert W. Love; son, and William T. (Linda) Love; grandchildren, Sarah Love and Beth McQuay, Robert A. Love, Candice (Justin) Hertlein, Matthew (Jessica) Love, and Melissa (Rob) Seigle; step grandchildren, Johnathan and Janelle Walker; and great grandchildren, Michael, Alyssa, Christian, Brenden Love, Gavin William Hertlein, Connor and MacKenzie Love, and Brianna and Kristian Seigle.
Doris grew up in north St. Louis city going to St. Phillip Neri Catholic Elementary School and church. She then attended Beaumont High School until the 11th grade when she had to leave school in order to find employment to help her parents. She met and married Andrew Jackson Love, Jr. in 1938 and in the subsequent years from 1940 until 1957 had 5 children; John (who passed away in 2007 at the age of 67), Phillip, Peggy, Bob, and Bill.
During her lifetime, she was a stay at home Mom (before it was fashionable) and a homemaker. She eventually became an Avon cosmetics consultant and enjoyed this line of work for 10 years. Later on in her life, she went back to work for her son, Bob, in a retail music store for a few years.
She was a devout Catholic and attended mass even while in the nursing home. She prided herself in not using curse words and would chide her kids if they used them. Her hobbies included playing cards, going to bingo, and Lotto games at the local churches. And when they became legal in MO, she enjoyed playing the slots at the casinos. She went to Las Vegas a few times and got to see the sparkly lights on the Strip.
After she lost her husband, Andy, in 1981 she travelled to Los Angeles to visit her nephew and his wife and then later went on a “road trip” with that same nephew and his wife along the East and Southeastern shore. She loved to see the ocean and was able to see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Doris loved her small group of friends and they often did many things together, especially Freda who lived the longest; although Doris outlived them all.
She loved her family and loved going to family functions for the holidays where she could visit with most everyone in the family. She will be dearly missed but lovingly remembered.
A special thank you from the family to The Quarters at Des Peres and Alternative Hospice for their love and care of Doris. Memorials are appreciated to:
