Carlos “King” Gonzalez, 89, of St. Augustine, FL, passed away on December 01, 2024. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on September 16, 1935, and was the cherished son of the late Carmen Colon and Abelardo Gonzalez. Carlos moved to NYC with his family at the age of five. Carlos married his sweetheart, Irene Mojica, on June 10, 1965, and together, they raised five daughters, Renee Bailey, Kathleen Wilford, Denise Murdock, Crystal Harley, and Carla Gonzalez Reynolds.
Carlos was extremely hard-working. No one can recall him ever missing a day of work. That hard work and dedication paid off. He eventually worked his way up to becoming the Vice President of a prominent NYC construction insurance company. After retiring, Carlos moved to St. Augustine, Florida to escape the cold, harsh winters of NY.
In his spare time, Carlos liked to play golf and watch basketball and football. In addition to his beloved NY teams, the Yankees and the NY Knicks, he enjoyed watching the LA Lakers. He also relished in driving out to Long Island to enjoy fresh seafood, particularly oysters.
Carlos enjoyed returning to his beloved island, Puerto Rico. He loved the food, culture, and music of home. Favorable memories always include him dancing to the Salsoul Orchestra. Salsa was his favorite. As he aged and became weaker, he always mustered up a move when Salsa music was played for him.
Carlos is survived by one sister, Nellie Suarez, four daughters, Renee, Denise, Crystal, and Carla, his son-in-laws, Keith Harley and Larry Murdock, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Carlos will be laid to rest on his beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
A celebration of life will be held on February 8th in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
Arrangements under the direction of Hardage-Giddens St. Johns Funeral Home, St. Johns. www.hgstjohns.com.
