He was a 3-year starter as a linebacker and fullback, and was elected as captain his senior year. After graduation he joined the Army reserves where he played one season of football. In 1961 he enrolled at Washington University. He started every game for the next four years. He led the team in tackles each year and was named captain of the Bears his senior year. At his senior banquet he was awarded the Top Tackler trophy, the Most Spirited Senior award, and Most Valuable Player for the homecoming game. Upon graduation from college, he was hired by the Ladue School District in St. Louis to teach and coach football. He briefly left Ladue to coach at John Burroughs for 3 years. He then returned to Ladue for the remainder of his career. His proudest moments were coaching his 3 sons who were each selected as captains of their respective teams. Coach Maher was named the Head Varsity Coach of the Ladue Rams in 1982 and remained Head Coach until he retired in 2007. During his 25year tenure with the Rams, he was the winningest coach in Ladue's 57 year history. A life size bronze RAM, in front of the Velten-Maher Fieldhouse that overlooks the football field, was dedicated to Coach Jerry Maher in honor of him starting the current Middle School Football program. In 2005 he was inducted into the Missouri State Football Hall of Fame and the Demetrius Johnson Foundation Hall of Fame.
