What a great guy!  And I am so sorry to hear this news.   We spent our entire Army career together, from draft day, basics at Ft. Leonard Wood, advanced training at Ft. Dix and Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY.  And we even served together at different chapels at Ft. Carson.  He joined us for Thanksgiving in our little Colorado Springs apartment in 1971.  Great memories of a good friend, during trying times.  We weren't "battle buddies," thank goodness, but great Army buddies.  We kept those chaplains in line!  I will alway remember his steady advice, good humor, and mischievous smile.   God Bless You Specialist Houchin.   Jim and Pat Cook

Our most vivid memories as you would expect are those of the countless hours we spent with Rod at Grasso Field, especially those spent tending the concession stand and watching the men's softball games. We are very sorry for your loss.

A great friend will never be forgotten. In softball I was a DEAD pull hitter and before I stepped in the box I would look at Rod, playing at third, and say it’s coming your way , you ready , and he would say “bring it on”. Great battles.

I will always remember Rod as a friend. A man who enjoyed every bit of life, his great smile and hardy laugh were two of his great traits.  Rod was Precious Blood's concession stand manager extraordinaire!  , when a extra hand was needed at the field he was always there. I will miss dropping by his house and visiting him. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM AS THE JOYFFUL CARING MAN HE WAS. HE IS PROBABLY MANAGING THE CONCESSION STAND INHEAVEN, and we will probably be the last to leave just like Grasso Field. 
 Thanks for your friendship , I will never forget you.

Remember Rodney as the third baseman on the old Peat Marwick slow  pitch softball team back in the early 70s.  I played first and any ground ball to Rodney was an out.  He had a strong arm and most times threw a natural curve to first.   His glove looked like it was his first one he got as a kid.
