

SISKIND, BERNARD – of Swampscott. Entered into rest December 27, 2012 at the age of 94. He was the beloved husband of the late Selma (Lipsky) Siskind and later in life to Joan Garfield. Born in Boston, he was the dear son of the late Abraham & Fannie (Miller) Siskind. Bernard was a graduate of Chelsea High School, class of 1935 and Tufts University, class of 1939 where he earned his Chemical Engineering Degree.
During World War II, he served as a civilian with the Naval Bureau of Ordinance, equipping ships to fire accurately despite the pitch and roll of the ships. He was awarded from the Commandant of the First Naval District several citations for his inventions.
Mr. Siskind had been on the Board of Directors since 1956 for the former Temple Beth El in Swampscott. He was the chairman for the temple’s Hebrew School and Scholarship Committees. Bernard was also a member of Mt. Carmel Masonic Lodge and B’nai B'rith
In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by five devoted children, Beverly Kahn of Swampscott, Norma Saunders & her husband Roger of Boston, David Siskind & his wife Joan of Concord, Lawrence Siskind & his wife Patricia of Piedmont, CA and Amy Siskind of Mamaroneck, NY; his loving brother Roland Siskind of N. Miami Beach, FL; nine cherished grandchildren; three adored great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. He was also the brother of the late Charlotte Levenson.
Funeral Services will be held at Congregation Shirat Hayam, 55 Atlantic Ave, Swampscott on Monday, December 31, 2012 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Cong. Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Beth El Section, Peabody. Friends and family are invited to gather immediately following interment at Kernwood Country Club, 1 Kernwood St, Salem, MA 01970. Memorial observance will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4PM & 6-8PM at his late residence. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the charity of your choice.
