Mr. Berman was born on October 21, 1930 at home in Philadelphia, PA and died July 30, 2015. He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A.B. in Philosophy in 1952. He continued graduate work at Brandeis University in History of Ideas and, also in Education at Boston University.
He worked in the field of sound recording and motion pictures in Boston at several studios. His technical expertise included phonograph record mastering and the rerecording of optical sound tracks for film. He specialized in educational, training, and documentary filmmaking; he moved into video production and, eventually, into public access media.
In that role, he oversaw the design, construction, and equipping of Beverly’s community access TV facility, serving as the first and Founding President of Beverly Cable & Telecommunications Corporation (BevCam), and later served on the Beverly Cable TV Commission. He was most proud of this work as a significant contribution to the civic life of the Beverly community.
In addition to his professional work. Mr. Berman taught filmmaking courses in technique and gave lectures at Emerson College; The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington; The Cambridge Center for Adult Education in Cambridge, the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, and Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts. He received many awards at film and video festivals, both national and international for his media productions.
He is survived by his wife, Felicia M. DeMay-Berman, and three children, Eric Miller, Andrea Price, and Raoul Berman, and one grandchild, Zachary L. Miller.
