COHEN, Joel G. – of Salem, entered into rest January 6, 2016 at the age of 78. Beloved husband of Stephanie (Katz) Cohen and the late Linda (Garber) Cohen. Beloved father of Laurie and Isaac Silverman of CT, Shelley and Travis Hartnett of Grafton, Scott Schultz of CA, Heidi and Seth Davis of NJ, and Sherri and Jacob Kramer of OH. Loving brother of Philip and Barbara Cohen of Swampscott. Beloved grandfather of Noah and Liora Silverman, April and T.J. Hartnett, Marley and Zach Davis and Jackson and Sylvie Kramer. Joel was the embodiment of a mensch: his unconditional love, his warm and loving good natured ways of connecting, his undying devotion to all he loved. Joel was a kind soul; he treated people from all walks of life with equal respect, no matter their status. Joel was passionate about his religious community. He was an avid member of Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore where he was a member of the Ritual Committee and the Brotherhood Committee. Joel would read Torah at a moment’s notice. One could find Joel speedwalking, running or swimming along Lynn Shore Drive. In his younger years, Joel was an accomplished pianist who loved classical music. Joel and Stephanie enjoyed traveling together; especially to Florida and Tanglewood. His family is honored to be a part of his legacy and a recipient of his love. To say he will be missed is a gross understatement. Joel’s family is committed to his memory and will remember him through story, song, ritual, and kindness to others. We are all better people because we had Joel in our lives. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore, 55 Atlantic Ave., Swampscott on Friday, January 8 at 10:00AM. Interment will be held at Lindwood Memorial Park in Randolph. A memorial observance will be held at The Village at Vinnin Square Club House, Loring Hills Ave., Salem following the interment on Friday and will continue on Saturday afternoon and evening. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Silverman home in CT on Sunday from 3-5PM and 6:30-9PM and on Monday from 6-9PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joel’s name may be made to Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore, 55 Atlantic Ave., Swampscott, MA 01907.
