Lois Baker-Ernst of Peabody, MA, entered into rest on May 17, 2021 at the age of 97. Beloved wife of the late Bernard L. Baker. Subsequently predeceased by her husband, Martin Ernst, and later partner Richard Gordon.

Devoted mother of Jeffrey A. Baker and his wife Susan Baker (California), Ralph S. Baker and his wife Judith S. Baker (Massachusetts) and Richard J. Baker and his wife Rebekah E. Anderson (Minnesota). Cherished grandmother of Sahana Baker-Malone and her husband Joseph Baker-Malone, Josha Baker and her partner Daniel McChesney-Young, Toshi Baker and his wife Winnie Wen (California), Megina Baker and her husband Johannes Mark (Massachusetts), Robert Baker of Kirkwood, (California), Benjamin Baker and his wife Elizabeth Baker (New York), and Sarah Baker (Minnesota), and great-grandmother of seven great-grandchildren. The loving sister of the late Ina Berman and her late husband William Berman, and of Marvin Sterman of Peabody, MA and his late wife Shirley Sterman. Dear daughter of the late Max and Eva Sterman of Brookline, MA.

Lois grew up in Brookline, MA, graduated from Brookline High School, and raised her family on Galloupes Point in Swampscott, MA, close to the ocean, where she lived for over 50 years.

She graduated with a degree in music and piano from the Longy School of Music and taught piano from her home. Lois and Bernie were founding members of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, MA, where she was a dedicated member of the Sisterhood and of the Social Action Committee. She volunteered for many years at both Lynn and Salem Hospitals, and recorded books for the blind. She was also a life-long patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She loved classical music, nature, reading, baking and decorating cakes, gourmet cooking and entertaining, knitting, walking, bicycling and cross-country skiing. Lois was an avid traveler but particularly cherished her time spent with family and her many friends.

Due to regulations imposed by the Coronavirus Pandemic, a private service will be held at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel.

Shiva will be held at Mission on the Bay, 141 Humphrey St., Swampscott, MA, on May 20, 2021, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Lois’s memory to Temple Emanu-El, 393 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead, MA 01945, www.emanu-el.org; or to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston, MA 02115, https://www.bso.org.
