Mr. Sidney Samuel Adelson, 100, of Portland, formerly of Swampscott, Mass., and Revere, Mass., entered into rest on Dec. 15, 2014, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.Sidney was born on May 2, 1914, in Chelsea, Mass., to David and Annie Rubin Adelson. He grew up on Campbell Avenue in Revere and graduated from Revere High School, class of 1932. He attended Northeastern University where he studied business until his father died when he had to leave school and work to provide for his family. Sidney took over the wholesale fabric business started by his father and built it into General Rubber Fabric Company which he owned and operated for over 50 years in Boston's North End with his brother Bernie. Sidney entered the Army in October 1943 and served in WWII with the 127th General Hospital as an X-Ray Technician Fourth Grade in the Northern France Rhineland Campaign. After his discharge in January 1946, he returned home to Revere and the family business. General Rubber Fabric Company supplied upholsters and furniture companies all over New England. It was originally located on Lancaster Street and then moved to Portland Street a few blocks from North Station. On April 1, 1947, he married Gladys Shiro of Waterville. They had three children, Barbara, David and Mark. They moved to Swampscott, Mass., in 1950, where they lived, first on Hampshire Street and then at Crowne Point, until 2013, when they moved to Portland to be closer to family. For 20 years after his retirement Sidney and Gladys spent their winter months in Lake Worth, Fla., enjoying the warm weather and the company of new friends. For someone who never had a driver's license, Sidney was well traveled. He loved his trips with Gladys to the far corners of the globe, including Greece, Hong Kong, London, France, Alaska and Mexico. One of his favorite travel experiences was the trip through the Panama Canal. His favorite pastime was playing cards and socializing with close friends and family. More than anything else he was dedicated to his family and cherished the family get-togethers on the North Shore and at the Shiro family cottage on Snow Pond in Oakland. Summer weekends in Maine were special with carpentry projects, boat rides on the lake and cookouts. He loved telling stories of growing up in Revere and Revere Beach, where he worked at the amusement park during summers. Sidney was predeceased by his nine brothers and sisters; his daughter Barbara Ellen Bahamonde; and his son-in-law George Bahamonde. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys; his son David and his wife Lydia, grandson Sam and granddaughter Barbara of Readfield; his son Mark and his wife Maggie of Portland, grandson Zachary of Brooklyn and grandson Alex of Chicago; his grandson Matthew and his wife Lourdes Bahamonde and his great-grandson Lucas of Glen Cove, N.Y.; as well as many loving nieces and nephews across the country. The family would like to give their sincerest thanks to the staffs at Birchwoods on Canco and Hospice of Southern Maine for their wonderful care and support in Sidney's final days.Services will be held at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin St., Salem, Mass., on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Sudlikov Cemetery, Fuller Street, Everett, Mass.
