Alicia lost her battle with cancer at theage of 65. She was born in San Antonio, Texas
to Andres and Consuelo Alvarez. Alicia grew up in Texas then moved to Oregon
in 1961. At the age of 13 she started working in the strawberry
fields in St. Paul. That’s where she eventually met her husband,
Julian Ruiz Jr. He asked her out numerous times before
she finally accepted. She came to realizethat was
one of the best decisions she made in her life.
They were married December 11th, 1965 and shared
48 wonderful years together. While living in St. Paul, they
had two children, Olga Christine and Julian James. They
moved to Salem in 1973 when Alicia got a job at Salem
Hospital in Environmental Services. She worked there
for 34 years before retiring. Alicia loved her trips to Spirit
Mountain Casino where she would usually win. Julian
would cash out her winnings and promptly loose them
in his machine. She enjoyed watching the Portland Trail
Blazers, Golf and any sports that she could find on TV,
but most off all she loved watching her grandchildren’s
sporting events. Alicia and Julian loved to travel all over
the country and into Mexico. She not only loved to cook
for her friends and family, but she was hands down the
best at it. The thing she cherished and loved the most
was her family.
Alicia is preceded in death by her Mother, Father, and
3 brothers, Andres, Cristobal and Antonio. She is survived
by her husband Julian Ruiz, her Daughter Olga Christine
(Brad) Fryman, Son Julian James Ruiz (Amanda), Brothers
Paul and Raymond Alvarez, Sisters Ester Espindola,
Adelfa Martinez, Hope Alvarez, Teresa Lopez and 9

The family would also like to give a special “thank
you” to the staff at Willamette Valley Hospice.
