

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Berneice Layman passed away on January 28, 2025. Berneice was born in Medford, OR on July 8, 1938. She was close to her parents, three brothers and 2 sisters. In 1950 she moved to Detroit, OR with one sister and her parents. Her father had taken a job with the construction of the Detroit Dam. In 1955 Berneice graduated from Detroit High School and married Robert (Bob) Layman who was leaving to enter the US Air Force. Berneice and Bob’s Air Force career had them moving every 3 years to places that included Europe, the Far East and many US states in those 20 years. They retired in 1973 to Detroit, OR to take over the Cedars Restaurant from Bob’s parents Earl and Audrey Layman. Their last move in 1988 was to their home on the Santiam River in Mehama, OR. In 2019 Berneice moved to Spokane, WA to be closer to her daughter for care.
Berneice had a plethora of jobs and hobbies during her life. She was a land sales agent in Texas, line cook at Air Force base’s cafeterias, waitress, owner of the Cedars Restaurant in Detroit and owner and baker for the newly built Mountain High in Detroit, OR in 1979. She enjoyed sewing, reading with her book club and the extensive travel her and Bob did after leaving Detroit and the daily running of the Cedars Restaurant. Berneice was always a welcoming hostess at her home for the many parties they had with and for their many friends, she had over the years.
Berneice was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Layman, their marriage being 63 years, her three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her children Connie LaMont, David Layman, Daughter -in-law Lee Layman, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at Virgil T. Golden, Saturday February 22, 2025 at 11:00.
