Dr. Carl “Pete” Matthey lived a fun, full life that enriched the lives of those around him. He truly never met a stranger. At his alma mater, Colgate University, his outgoing personality earned him the nickname “Hi, hey, hello-there”.
Born in Davenport, Iowa, he and his family moved to Salem in 1968. As a physician, he led a diverse career in the public and private sector. He was one of the first emergency room physicians, from 1969 to 1981, at the Salem Hospital. He was also a physician at the State Hospital serving the geriatric population, the Marion County Jail from 1972-1989, and had a family practice. He finished his career at the Fairview Training Center, and as an ER Physician at Santiam Memorial Hospital.
One of his contributions to the Salem area was the activity club he founded in 1991 called 4 Seasons Sports & Recreation, which is still in existence today. The club, when he led it, focused on outdoor group activities, such as skiing, biking and travel.
Dr. Matthey is survived by his wife Joyce Matthey and two children, Calvin Mann and Jennifer Riker, a daughter-in-law and son-in-law, his two grandsons, as well as a sister Rosalyn Van Houghton. His previous wife, Lynn Talbot, died in June 2023.
Dr. Matthey was an Air Force veteran and he was deeply loved by his patients, friends and family.
Services are planned at 10:30am on Saturday, February 17th at St. John Lutheran Church 1350 Court Street NE, Salem. A reception will follow. All are welcome who knew Dr. Matthey and his family.
