The youngest of three boys including older brothers Paul and Otto, Carl was born on the family farm in Beavercreek, Oregon to George and Katherine Schmidt. German was spoken in the home and at church, so he learned English at school.
A graduated of Oregon City High School, Carl went on to earn a bachelor of science in agriculture from Oregon State College.
He served his country in the Korean War as an artillery forward observer and battery commander. Living in a dug-out bunker during the cold Korean winter fueled a lifelong appreciation for hot coffee. Following his return from Korea, Carl attended flight school in Texas.
He was married to Joyce, his loving and devoted wife, for over 56 years. Their first date was the movie “Around the World in 80 Days”, a prelude to many adventures travelling the world together.
Carl had a 30+ year career with Oregon Highway Department in right of way as an appraiser, during which he put over 1,000,000 miles on state vehicles.
Carl enjoyed gardening, reading historical fiction, traveling, hiking, collecting coins and stamps, managing his timberland, and spending time with his family and friends. For years, he tended a large vegetable garden, fruit and nut trees, and grapes. He read his lifetime subscription to National Geographic and Reader’s Digest cover to cover.
Their first of many cruises was through the Panama Canal. Carl and Joyce also enjoyed an African safari and family visits to Germany. Locally, his favorite places in Oregon were the family woods in Beavercreek, Black Butte Ranch, and Steens Mountain.
He took enormous pride in his four grandchildren Karl, Katy, Joshua, and Hannah.
He will be missed by his wife, Joyce, children (Steven and Janet Schmidt, Glen and Ellen Schmidt, and Scott and Ruth Burk), four grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 18 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Trinity Foundation or the Glenn Jackson Scholarship Program at the ODOT.
