David was born October 15, 1929 in Salem. He lived in various places in the Willamette valley, eventually graduating from Monmouth High School. He then attended Northwest Christian College, graduating in 1953. September of that year he married Leona Faxon. He ministered at churches in St. John, WA and Wilbur, WA. In 1961 he moved his family to Salem where he began work as a custodian at North Salem High School, where he worked there until 1983 when his vision loss due to Retinitis Pigmentosa required a disability retirement. Also in 1961 he and his family began their involvement in the ministry of Court St. Christian Church. He became an elder, regularly played the organ on Sunday nights, sang in the choir and at times taught Sunday School classes. He used his various musical skills in many ways for the church. Ministry was very important to him.
David grew up with music, playing piano, organ violin, accordion, banjo and other instruments, including the bones. Besides using those skills at church, in retirement he began playing at various assisted living facilities. He began with a group call the Megatones, then played alone, playing hymns and standards from the 20's, 30's and 40's.
He is survived by his wife, Leona and children Nancy Eaton (Jerry) of Alsea, Alice Breyer (Skip) of Salem, Ann Jaynes and Robert Jaynes (Tina) of Grants Pass, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
David had a major stroke in 2013. The family is grateful to Regency Woodland, Breyer Foster Home (his daughter Alice) and Willamette Valley Hospice for their care for him.
Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 on Thursday, July 14 at Soma Church of Christ (meeting at West Salem Baptist Church, Rosemont and 8th). Memorial contributions can be made to Salem Union Gospel Mission or Christian Missionary Fellowship (CMFInternational)
