April 22, 1941 - December 27, 2011
Deanna Smith, our loving mother, wife, grandmother and friend crossed over to be with her Savior on December 27, 2011. Though her time with us felt too brief, she lived life to its fullest and touched countless lives.
Deanna was a devout friend. She was a vibrant, caring, Southern Belle from Texas. Her energy, charisma and positive outlook brought people together. She made a difference on a daily basis and delighted in bringing success, happiness and laughter to everyone in her path. She loved spending time with her husband, Denny, her family, and especially her biggest blessing in life, her grandchildren. The grandchildren participated in annual "Nanny Camp" where they would play games, have fun and eat good Texas food - and pizza!
Deanna had a heart of servitude and used her volunteer spirit extensively. She founded and participated in multiple groups that she believed made a difference. To name a few: she was the Co-Founder of Family Building Blocks in Salem, worked with the Salem Hospital Auxiliary, the Eugene Symphony and was a Docent at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. She was an instructor of cooking classes in Eugene and Salem. She was also the first female leader of the Oregon GOP and helped her husband, five-term U.S. Congressman Denny Smith, in various political engagements.
Deanna left us to be with her Lord on December 27, 2011 after suffering a stroke. She left behind her husband, Denny Smith of Salem OR; her daughter, Tonja Bridges of Heath, TX (Granddaughter Bailie Bridges) and her son, Mark Koenig of Eugene, OR (Grandchildren Samuel and Lily Koenig). From her blended family, Stanley Smith of The Dalles, OR; Maggie Hemmer of Salina, KS (Grandchildren Mac, Calvin and Brady Hemmer); Barrett Smith of Boise, ID (Grandchildren Cole and Caine Smith); Ryan Smith of Oregon City, OR; KC Barrett of Portland, OR; Pat Barrett of Bend, OR; and Matt Barrett of Bend, OR.
Her big heart, smile, "Thank You, Y'all" will be remembered by many.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 22, 2012 in Salem, OR. Memorial contributions may be made to Family Building Blocks. Arrangements have been made by Howell Edwards Doerksen Funeral Directors.
