John David Gunn was the third of five siblings and three half siblings. He was born at Salem General Hospital on July 15th, 1951 to Marjorie and Raymond Gunn of Salem. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Serra Catholic High School, and graduated from South Salem High School. His formative years were filled with joy as he spent countless hours roller-skating at the Roller Time Skate Rink in Salem, and competed in many competitions, eventually becoming the Northwest Senior Champion with his partner, Earlene Chapell.
His professional journey began with service to the community, working for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office from 1973 to 1978. Subsequently, he embarked on a diverse career in the canneries, starting with Agripac and concluding with Truitt Brothers where retired. John was truly a jack of all trades and could fix just about anything. He is well remembered for his “can do” attitude and solid work ethic.
In his personal life, John wore many hats. He was devoted husband to his wife Susan Gunn. John assumed all of her family as his own. He was a loving father to John (Jake), Alicia, Bobbie (deceased), and Joshua, whom he shared with first wife of 22 years, Patrica Gunn. His legacy extended to his six grandchildren, Tylinn, Ella, Cohen, Alex, Savanna, and his great-granddaughter Anaya. He was an awesome brother, amazing uncle, and was also a friend to everyone who encountered him. He “adopted” many friends as his own family.
Beyond his professional and family life, John was a man of many talents and interests. He was a dance instructor and loved to line dance. He was also a skilled diver, a student of Aikido, and self-taught bilingual speaking. His passion for the outdoors hunting, and firearms defined him as an avid outdoorsman. His CB call sign was “Gunslinger”.
His adventurous spirit took him to the Philippines and various other exciting destinations. He loved to hunt and go camping. The depth of his experiences and the many connections he formed underscore his impact on the lives of those around him.
As we remember John, let us cherish the memories of his vibrant life and the positive influence he had on everyone fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace.
John is survived by his wife Susan, his children, his grandchildren, his brother Jim, sisters Nancy and Alice, and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, and cousins. John will be dearly missed by many family and long time friends.
He joins his loved ones who preceded him in death: His daughter Bobbie, his father Raymond, his mother Marjorie, his sister Betty and his three brother Thomas, Raymond Jr., and Donald.
