William was born in Salem on the 24th of August, 1938. As a young boy during World War II, he and his family left Salem to follow his father, a Major in the U.S. Army, stationed in Seaside, Oregon followed by Savannah, Georgia. Returning to Salem, he continued his early education at Highland Grade School and Parish Junior High School. He graduated from North Salem High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army as an Infantryman from 1955 to 1958 and the United States Coast Guard as a Machinists Mate from 1959 to 1963 before joining the Oregon State Police. He served in the State Police for over 25 years, retiring in 1991 as a Lieutenant in the Criminal Division. He performed a myriad of duties with the State Police including patrol, hand writing identification, finger print identification and the composite artist for the Criminal Division. After retiring from the State Police he continued to serve as an Auxiliary Trooper on the Legislative and Governor’s detail.
William enjoyed hunting, fishing, competitive shooting, and was a life member of the Elks. He was also passionate about art, theological studies, and martial arts.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Betty Ann Greig of Salem and his Sister; Sally Jo Greig of Carmel California, Daughter; Kristy Foster, Sons; Samuel Morrison, Charles Morrison, and Scot Greig, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday March 30th at Howell Edwards Doerksen with Dignity Funeral Directors (1350 Commercial Street S.E. 97302). Services will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, March 31st at Howell-Doerksen followed by graveside with honors at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
