Catherine Griffin Burton

Catherine Griffin Burton, age 97, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2014. Catherine was born in Salt Lake City on March 14, 1917 to Arthur Griffin and Lucy Alice Sexton. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1939 where she was an active member of Delta Gamma Sorority. In 1940, Catherine married Edwin John Burton and they were together until his death in 1975.

Catherine worked as a reading specialist in Salt Lake School District teaching children with learning disabilities. Upon retiring she toured the world with the Friendship Force. She was an avid bridge player, Utes and Jazz fan and a member of Daria Literary Club. To all who knew her, she was a gracious hostess and friend.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, her two sons, Steven John Burton and James Randall Burton. Catherine will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Judith (Jay) Menlove, her daughter-in-law Cody Kay Burton, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Evans & Early Mortuary located at 574 East 100 South Salt Lake City, UT. A visitation for family and friends will be held 30 minutes prior to services. Online condolences may be shared at www.evans-earlymortuary.com.
