Jim passed away peacefully at Wentworth-Willow Creek. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ruth and Leon F. Rains. Though the family home was “Log Haven” in Salt Lake, Jim was raised in Sewickley, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Pittsburg). He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover MA, in 1944. Jim served in the U.S. Naval Reserves NROTC. He graduated in Engineering from Princeton University in 1950 and returned to Utah to work in the family-owned coal company in Rains, Utah. Jim married Joan Annette Dayton in July 1951. They had two daughters, Deborah Rains Leach and Pamela Rains Eckersley (Rand). He worked for Bonneville Ltd. In Wendover, UT in Potash Manufacturing, Tracy Collins Bank and Trust Company Property Management, and Salt Lake Blue Print and Supply Company until he retired. He was a member of Mount Mariah Lodge #2 (32-Degree Mason – York Rite), Alta Club, Salt Lake Tennis Club, New State Duck Club, and Salt Lake Rotary. Jim was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty and Jean; his brother, Phillip; and his wife, Joan. Jim was an avid duck hunter, golfer, skier, tennis player and gardener. He was cremated and, per his wishes, there will not be a memorial service. No flowers, please! The family suggests donations to Ducks Unlimited or a charity of your choice.
