Marjorie was born November 11, 1932 in Salt Lake City and grew up in
Sugarhouse. She was the third child of six, and only daughter, born to Gerrit and Helena Swart Smith. Marjorie graduated from South High School in 1952 and then attended BYU and LDS Business College before working at the Utah State Capitol for the Board of Education. From a young age Marjorie worked hard to help support her family, especially when her dad was incapacitated by a brain tumor when she was just 18. On December 20, 1962, she married Howard F. Hatch in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple, and together they had and raised eight children. They later divorced.
Hard work was a hallmark of Marjorie’s life—in service to God, her family, and others. She said she inherited her work ethic from her Dutch parents, both of whom immigrated from the Netherlands. Marjorie was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she had a fervent testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. Marjorie served in many callings throughout her life, including as a senior missionary in the California San Bernardino Mission. She especially loved serving in the temple, where she went several times a week. She also loved traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren, whom she cherished.
Marjorie is survived by her brothers Jerry (Nancy), G. Robert, and Ted (Marie); her eight children, Bradford (Erika), Melissa (Richard), Elisabeth (Rudy), Gregory, Susanne, Jonathan, Michelle (Corey), and David (Celeste); 29 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Joseph and C.
William, and grandson Michael.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Chapel, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held before the service from 9:45–10:45 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
