return to her Father in Heaven. She was born September 25, 1936 in Park City, Utah, to John Edward
and Viola Yates Hollands. Nancy also lived in Vernal, UT and Salt Lake City, UT. She married Rex Spens
Olsen July 30, 1953 in the Logan UT LDS temple. She graduated from South High School. Nancy and Rex
set up home in the East Millcreek area and spent the next 50 plus years serving the EMC 6 th Ward in
various capacities in the LDS Church. Service to others was an integral part of Nancy’s life. Many lives
were recipients of her love and generosity. Her family teased that local charity groups had her on speed
dial, as she was willing to place donations on her porch for distribution to those who were in need. She
spent many hours knitting thousands of hats for the homeless and sweaters for her family. She was
known for her caramel corn, fudge, and she enjoyed sharing her cooking and baked goods with others.
“her soul sat up. Those kinds of souls always do – the best ones. ‘I know who you are and I am
ready. Not that I want to come, of course, but I will come.’ Those souls are always light because
more of them have share. More of them have already found their way to other places..”
Nancy retired from 33 years of service to the US Postal Service in 2002. She finished her career as the
Data Site Manager. She was known for her integrity, her professionalism and her direct honest opinion.
She had a reputation of being a straight shooter.
She loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises, road trips and summers camping with her large family.
Nancy made good friends wherever she went. She was part of a “supper club” that gathered every
second Saturday of the month for more than 50 years. During the last two years of her life she
participated in a heart study with the Intermountain Heart Institute and St Jude’s Medical Center. She
was Utah’s only participant. She was faithful to the very end.
Nancy is survived by her brother Val (Barbara) Hollands and eight children, James D (Lori) Olsen;
Stephen Spens (Tara Dawn) Olsen; Rexene (David) Boyd; Rubylynn (Kelly) Vernon; Marian (Thayn)
Hansen; Thomas W. (Nancy) Olsen; Louise (Brian) Atkinson; Jayne (Robert) Hogan; 36 grandchildren, of
which she would proudly note there were an even number of boys and girls, and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and staff members of the many clinics and
practices that took such great care of her during her seven year battle. Most particularly they would
like to thank the Intermountain Heart Clinic at the Intermountain Medical Center. Their care has been
exceptional. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to the Intermountain Heart
Clinic, 5121 S Cottonwood St. Murray, UT 84107.
