Wendell was born 26 July 1929 in Centralia, Illinois to Opal Adelaide George and Harley Arthur Martin. He spent his childhood playing corkball and basketball with friends and fellow Boy Scouts he kept for life. Wendell’s parents passed away when he was fourteen years old and he lived with siblings until he joined the Air Force at nineteen years of age. He was very proud of his time serving our country in the Korean War.
Wendell met his eternal sweetheart, Jacqueline Ada Bleimehl at a roller rink and they were married for sixty-four years. They raised seven children in Chicago Heights, Illinois. They were baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and were sealed for time and eternity in the Manti, Utah temple in 1962.
Wendell worked as a mechanical engineer at Bennett Industries in Peotone, Illinois most of his professional life. He was a creator and inventor. He enjoyed designing and building new ideas and sharing the products with his friends and family. Wendell was an inspiration to all who knew him. Everyone knows his trademark handshake. He treasured his friendships and family relationships. He was enthusiastic about life and valued hard work, gathering, and taking care of others, especially his dear wife. He served in many capacities in his church, but his favorite callings involved missionary work.
The love and acceptance he gave to others was contagious and Wendell had many friends who would do anything to help him. His greatest treasures were his faith and his family. He and Jacky created a family rich in strength, loyalty and tradition. We know he was joyfully reunited with his parents, brothers and sister that he had missed for so many years.
