

Abundio Jose "Joe" Hernandez, 79, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, in his San Angelo home. Born March 24, 1934, in Raymondville, Texas, to Leocadio and Irenia Hernandez, Joe was the second of seven children. He married Emma Mejia Hernandez April 9, 1960. Joe proudly served in the military for 23 years, three years in the Army and 20 years in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant and retiring in 1976 from Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. Following his military career, Joe settled in San Angelo. He graduated from Angelo State University and subsequently worked for Texas Employment Commission until 1995. Active in the community, Joe was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church, San Angelo Pan-American Golf Association and Disabled American Veterans. He especially will be remembered for his love of golf and his friendly, generous personality. Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Emma; son J.C. Hernandez and wife Isabel Lasater Hernandez of Katy, Texas; grandchildren, Luke, Benjamin and Sabella Hernandez; sister Manuelita Mata of Sebastian, Texas; brother Santos Hernandez of Denver City, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to Marta Bailey, Tomas Sosa and the Szymanski family for their help and support. Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Johnson's Funeral Home. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret's Catholic Church with Father Joseph Choutapalli officiating. Military burial will follow in Lawnhaven Cemetery.
