Born July 4, 1935, he was the son of Dr. Charles W. and Louise Koberg, both long-time San Angeloans. Charles graduated from San Angelo High School in 1952 with honors, and then went on to Rice University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956 and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1957.
After his graduate year at Rice, he joined Convair in San Diego, California, testing cryogenic and high pressure gas systems on the Atlas ICBM project. Transferring to Vandenberg AFB, he spent seven years involved with flight test and deployment of the Atlas weapon system and its various launch site configurations.
Later career changes involved his association with Monsanto Textiles in St. Louis, which led to a short stint in Hong Kong heading ex-USA operations for a wig and hairpiece manufacturer and wholesaler. Upon his return to the States, he briefly lived in Durango, Colorado, before relocating to Palo Alto, California, as a venture consultant. Retirement brought him back to Texas and eventually his hometown of San Angelo.
He was a member of American Mensa Ltd., which he joined in 1967 soon after its establishment. An excellent tennis player, he enjoyed and ranked in competitive group singles tennis in California and Texas USTA sections until recent years.
He is survived by his precious partner Wilma Ripple Lichnovsky of San Angelo; his sister and brother-in law Luanne and Monte Nolen of Burnet; his nephew James Matthew Nolen of Franklin, Tennessee, and his niece Leigh Nolen Wolfe of Liberty Hill; and his former wife, Jane Felmlee Koberg of Sacramento, California.
At a later date, at his request, his cremains will be scattered over Engineer's Pass in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.
