With heavy hearts we said goodbye to Eva M. Tometich Reum on Tuesday. As a beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and sister, Eva fiercely battled cancer but finally lost the fight at 90-years-old. Eva was born on September 26, 1925 in Numa, Iowa to Rose and August Tometich. Eva’s parents immigrated to The United States from Croatia in the early 1900’s through Ellis Island and eventually settled in Numa, Iowa. Eva had two sisters and two brothers. Eva now joins her older siblings Tom Tometich, Steve Tometich, and Marie Frye in heaven, and is survived by her younger sister Teresa Weber. Eva had great successes throughout her life and was blessed to discover many passions she excelled at. As a young woman she played high school basketball and received a scholarship to play basketball at AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa where she received a bachelor’s degree in business. Playing as point-guard and receiving the title of “Most Valuable Player” several times, Eva was inducted into the IGHSAU Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
Eva took a summer job in 1945 in Chicago, Illinois after graduating from college where she met the love of her life, Donald J. Reum. Don was studying engineering at the University of Chicago at the time. Upon meeting they became inseparable and were married that same year. They shared the next 63 years together raising five wonderful children and tackling life as a team. After tying the knot, Don served in the United States Merchant Marines and Eva worked at Motorola building radios. They both shared a love of music and relished in the Chicago music scene. Don played saxophone in the Glenn Miller House band and Eva loved to go dance to the music. Eva and Don lived together in Chicago until 1963, when they decided it was time for them and their three children at the time to make a move out of the city. They migrated north, to St. Cloud, Minnesota where they eventually would build an empire from the ground up. Eva and Don are the founders of Avon Plastics Inc. and subsidiaries of Master Mark Plastics in Albany and Paynesville Plastics, all based in Minnesota. They enjoyed distinguished careers until their retired from the business in 1992. Don and Eva created and held many long-lasting friendships throughout their careers. When they retired they moved to Bonita Beach, Florida where they enjoyed walking along the ocean, putting their toes in the sand and collecting seashells. Eva and Don were very much in love throughout their marriage and fully appreciated retired life together, traveling often, laughing endlessly and creating memories that lasted a lifetime. Don and Eva moved to San Angelo, Texas 8- years ago when their middle daughter Lisa Schindler and her husband were transferred to San Angelo for work. This was also the home to her oldest daughter Susan Brundrett and her husband and children. Although Eva and Don enjoyed the tropical scenery in Florida, they decided to take the plunge and join their family in San Angelo, Texas. Eva loved to garden and was an excellent cook. She often had family and friends over for dinner to entertain and was always keen to show her guests her magnificent garden. Eva was very well read and enjoyed taking the time to be socially and politically aware. She read three newspapers everyday in their entirety and wouldn’t hesitate to wag her finger at news anchors on television. She loved to read novels and do crossword puzzles and she had a wonderful sense of fashion.
Eva was an extremely kind and giving person. She gave to many charities throughout her lifetime as well as to the people around her. She leaves behind so many people that love her dearly and greatly cherish the time they were able to spend with her. Eva is survived by her son Mark Reum and his wife Jackie in Avon Minnesota; her daughter Susan and her husband Bruce Brundrett from San Angelo, Texas; her daughter Lisa Schindler and son in-law Mark Schindler in San Angelo Texas; her daughter Elizabeth Reum in St. Cloud, Minnesota; her son Don J. Reum Jr. and his wife Alisa Reum in Nixa, Missouri; her wonderful grandchildren Chris Brundrett and Sarah Lowery, Hanna and Hayden Schindler, Anne Haakenson and Amy Reum, Kenzie Cotty, Tyler Eisenschenk and Jack Reum and Devin and Adaira Reum and six great-grandchildren. A service honoring Eva Reum is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 16th in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sheree Harris of First United Methodist Church officiating.
