Nell was born March 17, 1931 in Stith, Texas to James "Jim" Johnson and Delpha Rasberry Johnson Cook. She graduated from Merkel High School in 1947 and received her bachelor's degree in history and education from Abilene Christian College in 1950. Nell taught elementary school for 36 years in Paducah, Lubbock, and San Angelo schools. Most of her teaching career was spent in San Angelo's Lake View district schools, primarily Lake View Junior High. She remained an avid and intellectually curious reader her entire life, constantly in search of the origins of everything. Nell was a private, fiercely independent person, yet her family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues knew her to be empathetic, tender hearted, generous, and utterly trustworthy.
Nell was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother Lettie Rasberry, her parents, Jim and Delpha, and by her adored sister, Joy Allen.
She is survived by her loving and beloved daughter, Vonda Gay Nichols D'Errico and son-in-law Ronald D'Errico of Arlington, Virginia, her wonderful brothers and sisters-in law, James and Lola May Johnson and Gaylon and Sue Johnson of Moran, Texas, and her former sister-in-law June Selden of San Angelo. She leaves behind dearly loved nieces and nephews - Fay Holliday, Pamela Davis, Barry Allen, Lane Allen, Melissa Regan, Deborah Selden and their families. Nell will be grievously missed by all who loved her so, for she was always a fast and true friend and a most loving sister, aunt, and mother. For her life and her love which blessed our lives, we are all truly grateful.
Visitation will be at Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas on July 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held August 1 at 2:00 o'clock in the Moran Cemetery in Moran, Texas.
