George A. Samuels, 94 of San Angelo passed away on August 11, 2023. He was born on November 13, 1928, to Lawrence Samuels, Sr. and Connie McNeal Samuels in Temple, Tx. Upon graduating from high school, he moved to San Angelo to attend San Angelo College. His first job in San Angelo was at Harry’s Food Store. He then went to work with Jack McClung at Sunshine Grocery as a butcher. In 1958 George had the opportunity to start his own business by purchasing Spivy Hardware on N. Chadbourne. He changed the name to Samuels Hardware and was in business for 42+ years. He moved and expanded the store 2 times with the final location being at 3013 N. Chadbourne. It was said by many of his customers that if George didn’t have what you were looking for, it wasn’t available.
While working, George was also very involved with the North Angelo Lions Club for 50 years, the San Angelo Saddle Club, serving twice as president, the San Angelo Credit Bureau, the BBB, ASU Athletics Ram Club, various dance clubs and bowling leagues. He was also a loyal member of Sierra Vista Methodist church and faithfully attended his Sunday School class. In his spare time, George loved his time fishing. Both at Lake Nasworthy and deep-sea fishing in the Gulf and Costa Rica.
Upon retirement George had a second career as a volunteer at both the Shannon and Angelo Community hospitals. He did that faithfully until a month ago. He also had begun volunteering at the Baptist Memorial Gift Shop.
