Henry Louis Van Slaars

Henry L. Van Slaars, 79, died on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born in Athens, Greece, on Nov. 19, 1934, to Sidney and Fernande (Noblet) Van Slaars. Henry lived in Greece, France and the United States as a child. The family arrived in the United States on Sept. 18, 1941, from Lisbon, Portugal. He attended Ascencion School in New York City. Henry went on and received his bachelor's degree in business from St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont. The family were members of Ascencion Church in New York City. Henry served in the United States Air Force as a paratrooper. He then was employed by Simmons in Vermont as a financial analyst. Henry's final career lead him to his job at The Watergate Bar in Washington, D.C., where he meet some very interesting people over the years. In 1999, Henry came to live in Texas in his RV at Lake Nasworthy, where he was very happy and meet some wonderful friends over all these years. He was an avid fan of pro basketball, especially his team, the San Antonio Spurs. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant nephew, Thomas Van Slaars. Left to cherish his memory are his brother and wife Robert and Gloria Van Slaars of San Angelo; sister and husband Marilyn and Jean-Marie Goisque of Meaux, France; sister Janine Van Slaars of Meaux, France; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a wonderful host of friends across the United States. The family expresses much appreciation and thanks to the entire staff of Park Plaza Nursing Home and Hospice of San Angelo for their compassionate and loving care given to Henry these past months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Inc., P.O. Box 471, San Angelo, TX 76902. "Au revoir, Uncle Henry, until we meet again!" Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Calvary Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home.
