Jacqulyn (Jackie) Day Mayfield, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, was called home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2012. Jackie was born July 26, 1926, in Durant, Oklahoma to James E. and Julia Day. She attended Lake View High School and San Angelo Junior College.
On January 11, 1947, Jackie married Richard Mayfield, her high school sweetheart. They were married over fifty-four years, until Richard’s death in May 2001. Jackie dedicated her life to raising her family, including a daughter, Myra Marsh, son, Bruce, and much loved grandson, Shane Horeis.
Jackie worked in the Radiology Department at Shannon Hospital for sixteen years and then at San Angelo Radiology for another twenty-four years. She was a loyal member of Lake View Baptist Church for many years before joining Immanuel Baptist Church. Jackie selflessly and faithfully served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher as well as a leader in WMU and with children in Awanas. Jackie hand carried Sunday School books and even sat and read lessons to shut in Sunday School members. Jackie will also be remembered for her sense of humor, always ready with a joke to make those around her laugh. She never met a stranger and would talk to anyone who crossed her path.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, James E. and Julia Day, brother Carroll Day, and husband, Richard Mayfield. She is survived by her daughter Myra and her husband Randy, and grandson, Shane Horeis, of San Angelo, as well as her son, Bruce, of San Angelo. She is also survived by two sisters, Sybil Connell and her husband Kenneth, and Sylvia Maxwell, both of San Angelo, brother-in-law Paul Mayfield and wife Neenya of Sherman, as well as many nieces and nephews, who loved her dearly.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 15, at 2 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank the Shannon Four South Nursing Staff, Dr. Peter Chang, Brandy Whitehead, Dr. David Burger and Kim Coon for all the tender and compassionate care that they provided to Jackie.
Memorial gifts may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church or West Texas Boys Ranch.
