Johnnye Louise Cope

She graduated from Paint Rock High School in 1942, the University of North Texas in August 1945, Ohio State where she received a Master of Arts degree with a major in English in 1949, and from the University of Michigan in 1954 where she received a Master of Arts degree majoring in Library Science.

Ms. Cope subsequently was the reference and humanities librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and at the University of North Texas until her retirement in 1989. At that time she moved to San Angelo where she remained until her death. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. Johnnye will be remembered by her many friends and associates for her gracious nature, her love of literature and her wonderful wit.

One sibling, a brother, James Curry Cope of Lake Jackson died in 2007. She is survived by two nephews, Steven Cope of Bloomington, MN and Shawn Cope of Austin, TX. She was also preceded in death by one nephew, Dirk Cope.

A Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday 15 October 2012 at the Baptist Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Kevin McSpadden officiating. Interment of ashes will be in the Columbarium of First United Methodist Church at a later date. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral Home.
