Lester was born in Miles on June 29, 1932 to Emmett and Ella Mae Smith. He attended school and worked the family farm until joining the United States Navy, and served in the Korean War. Lester worked for Monarch Tile for 29 years. A lifelong student of the Good Book, he was most recently a member of Baptist Temple. An avid league bowler, Lester’s best score was meeting Francisca, his wife-to-be of twenty five years, the first time she set foot in a bowling alley. Lester loved music. He played the guitar and fiddle, and his harmonica was never far out of reach.
A graveside memorial service is at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jay Clatworthy of Lifepoint Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
Lester is survived by his wife Francisca; son Jerry Smith and his wife Doris and their son William; daughter Karen Ragsdale and her daughters Summer and Addison; step-daughter Rose Green and her husband Kyle and their daughter Chelsea; step-daughter Helen Hulse and her husband David and their children Jaxon and Haylee; and several great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home for their years of care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walk To End Alzheimer’s – San Angelo, Alzheimer’s Association, 4400 N Big Spring C-32, Midland, TX 76905.
