Marcus Luther Oquin, beloved Father, and “Dado”, passed quietly into the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, May 29, 2015 in San Angelo, Texas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday, June 1, 2015 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 2, 2015 and will be conducted by Chaplin Nancy York. A native of San Angelo, Marcus was born on October 20, 1927. He attended local public schools including San Angelo High School, where he excelled in sports including being halfback on the State Champion Bobcat football team of 1943. It was there that he met the light and love of his life, Betty Elaine Jones. After High School, he attended San Angelo College and he and Betty married on November 10, 1946. They later had two sons whom they showered with their abundant love. Early in his career, Marcus was a broadcaster, sportscaster and salesman for local radio and TV stations. In 1953, he became a partner in founding Jones & Lyons Oil Company, a San Angelo-based exploration, production and land service company. In 1973, he embarked on a career as an Independent Professional Landman, purchasing oil and gas leases and mineral interests throughout Texas and beyond until his retirement in 2000. He was an avid sports enthusiast and diehard Cowboys and Rangers fan. He enjoyed building and collecting clocks in his spare time and their home was always filled with wonderful chimes and bells of all kinds. Marcus’ greatest joy in life was his family. He was a kind, gentle and fun-loving soul filled with love for his fellow man. His inner strength was an inspiration to his family and those who knew him. He possessed the heart of a lion a will to match. His word was his bond and he lived his Christian faith daily in his words and deeds. We will sincerely miss his warm smile, the twinkle in his eyes and the love and tenderness he poured out on us all. Marcus is survived by his two sons and their wives, Kevin and Karla Oquin of San Angelo and Terry and Jamie Oquin of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, Kristi Carlson and her husband Erik of Allen, TX and Aaron Oquin and his wife, Karen and their children, Aiden and Evan Oquin of San Angelo; his nephews, Larry Oquin of South Padre Island, TX; Lanny Layman and wife, Joni and their daughters and Steve Layman and his sons of San Angelo; brother-in-law, Bill Schulkey of Ft. Worth and Bill’s daughters Gretchen Childs and husband, Tilden and their sons of Ft. Worth, and Rachel Griffith and husband, Michael and their daughters of Springtown, TX. Many earthly angels have assisted Dad and the family over the past few years. We all wish to express our sincere and heart felt gratitude to Mrs. Maria McArthur whose tender loving kindness has sustained us all. In addition, we would like to thank Anna Guerra, Gina Weatherby and Debbie Harris as well as Pam Murphy, Nancy York and all the wonderful nurses and staff of Hospice of San Angelo, Inc. who so kindly and generously gave their most gentle and loving care to Dad. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Inc. or a favorite charity.
