She was the firstborn child of William James Boehme and Mary Boriskie Boehme. The year she was born her parents started The Texas Baking Company on Chadbourne Street in downtown San Angelo later moving "Boehme's Bakery" to 1310 Colorado St. Much later, it became Mrs. Boehme's Holsum Bakery.
Margaret was educated in the San Angelo public schools. In 1933, she graduated from San Angelo Junior College and in 1935, she graduated from San Angelo Business College. After graduation, she took a position at Wood Motor Company, the San Angelo Ford dealership. When San Angelo Junior College became Angelo State University, she enjoyed being a member of the Golden Oldie Exes at ASU special events.
In 1936, she witnessed the great San Angelo flood, a memory that stayed with her until her last days. Foremost in her memories of that event were watching everything, including houses, wash down the Concho River and sleeping on the third floor of a downtown business building when it became impossible to return home.
On Nov. 22, 1937, she married William Franklin Drake, Junior or "Son", as he was known by his family and friends. Son was the grandson of F.M. Drake and J.W. Odom, who were early settlers of Crockett County. After marrying Son, she gave up her career in business and became a housewife and devoted mother to their two daughters, Mary and Jane. Margaret was a talented seamstress with a gift for clothing design who enjoyed all things sartorial and artistic. She left behind a book she created which describes what clothes she wore throughout her lifetime. She included sketches of her garments with identifying colors, accessories, fabrics and shoes.
She was confirmed into the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, San Angelo, on Sept. 9, 1928, by the Rt. Rev. Eugene Cecil Seaman, the first Bishop of North Texas. In 1962, Bishop Cecil Seaman's son, the Rev. Henry Seaman, performed the marriage service of Margaret's daughter, Mary, to Mike Ellington at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Faith, Santa Fe, N.M. She enjoyed being a member of the same bridge club for almost 60 years.
Another interest was collecting "ditties" which she frequently sang for her family. And, she was an ardent fan of Texas A&M football.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years in 1987; her brother, Otto Boehme, in 1928; her sister, Elsie Boehme DeLaney, in 1996; and her daughter, Jane Drake Wilson, in 1999.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Drake Ellington and her husband, Mike Ellington; her granddaughter, Cally Maria Ellington; her grandson, Michael U. Ellington Jr. and his wife, Stacy; and her special great-grandchildren, Michael Underwood Ellington III (16), Jack Christopher Ellington (14) and Adelaide Drake Ellington (11); a nephew, Graham DeLaney III and wife Janie; and a host of other nieces, nephews and family.
In keeping with her wishes a private family graveside service will be held with Father Bob Hedges officiating. Burial will be Friday, Sept. 21, in Fairmount Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Margaret Boehme Drake San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Endowment Fund, in care of the San Angelo Area Foundation, Suite 205, 2201 Sherwood Way, San Angelo, TX, 76901, SAAfound.org; or Hospice of San Angelo, 36 E.
