Oneita (Nita) Maxine Newsom was born on December 8th, 1929 in Tom Green County to Alva Churchwell Newsom and William Ghent Newsom. She passed into the loving arms of Jesus on January 24, 2022 in San Angelo.
Nita attended school in San Angelo and graduated from Lake View High School. She married Arnold A. Stovall in January 1949. They had two children, Nancy and Phill. Arnold passed away suddenly in 1973. Becoming a widow at the age of 44, Nita was persistent and never slowed down. She had a successful career in the banking industry, retiring as an Assistant Vice President in 1992.
God blessed Nita’s life with Bob Duncan and they married in 1991. Together for over 30 years, they enjoyed R.V. traveling throughout Texas and neighboring states. Nita was happiest in the kitchen making delicious meals, hot rolls, and desserts. She was a talented seamstress and quilter. Growing beautiful flowers and good vegetables was high priority. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and was an exceptional musician. Nita played piano and organ for countless church and secular events. In her prime, she could hear a song, sit down at the piano, and play it by ear.
She was a devoted Christian, and a loving and faithful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Nita considered her faith and her family as her greatest legacy. She faced several difficult health struggles, each time fighting through recovery to return home. Her last battle was her greatest victory, returning to her eternal home in Heaven.
Nita was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and Duncan son-in-law Neil Calder, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her husband Bob Duncan and sister-in-law Stella Duncan of the home in Robert Lee. She is survived by daughter Nancy Halfmann and husband Billy, son Phill Stovall and wife Star, brother Jimmy Newsom and wife Frankie and family. Also surviving is sister-in-law Janet Wright.
Nita was the proud grandmother to Jill Halfmann, Shane Halfmann and wife Britnie, Stacy Halfmann and Leslye Molamphy. Great grandchildren of Grandma “Snowball” are Kinsley, Brody, Preslee, and Abigail.
Her Duncan children include Phyllis Calder, Bobby and wife Joyce Duncan, Buck and wife Kellye Duncan. Duncan grandchildren include Jarren Calder and wife Rachel, Jaree Beets and husband Dusty, Derek Duncan and wife Ashley, Brenton Duncan, Kelsy Millican and husband Lance, and Kaden Duncan. Duncan great grandchildren include Elise, Colt, Kyler, Karlee, Riley, Reed, River, Cooper, Kelsey, Charlotte, Caroline and Coy.
