
Walter S. McGregor went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, September 28, 2012. He was born August 3, 1916 in Lampasas to W.S. McGregor Jr. and Earl Grace Holland McGregor. He spent his youth in Temple, Texas graduating from Temple High in 1934. He headed off to Texas A&M University in the fall of ’34 and graduated in 1938. He married Julia Faye Webster on August 30, 1941 in San Antonio, TX. He entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1941 with assignment in the medical corp., serving in station hospitals in Texas, Arizona, California, Idaho, and with the 202nd General Hospital in England and Paris, France. When the war ended Walter was discharged from the Army as a Major in February, 1946. After discharge he served as executive office of the V.A. hospital in Waco, Texas. In 1947 he jumped at the opportunity to start a ranching career in Schleicher County, Texas and he ranched in Schleicher and Tom Green counties for over 50 years. Mack, as his friends called him, was an avid sports fan and attended every sporting event that his children participated in and attended every track and tennis meet that were close to home to watch his two granddaughters. He was a charter member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Eldorado serving the Lord however and whenever he could. After the loss of his wife in 1998 he became a volunteer at Shannon Hospital, helping people however he could with his pleasant smile and kind words. He was a people person and a care-giver at heart and he enjoyed that calling as a volunteer for many years. He loved his children, his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren who affectionately called him Goopaw. He will be sorely missed, but the memories are fantastic.
Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife and helpmate, Julia Faye, and his daughter Judy. He is survived by his son John and wife Ginger of San Angelo, Scott and wife Mickey of Eldorado, and son-in-law Bob Maier and wife Lydia of Houston, his grandchildren Webster McGregor of San Angelo, Stuart McGregor of Ft. Worth, Angie Plemons and husband Steve of Midland, Caty Pickett and husband Will of Ft. Worth, Chris Maier and wife Denise of Springfield, Virginia, Brian Maier and wife Cindy of St. Louis, Missouri. He is also survived by 9 great grandchildren: Amanda and Christian Maier, Brian and Gregory Maier, Mack and Ben Plemons, James, Elizabeth, and Scott Pickett, and one great-great grandchild, two nieces and one nephew. He is also survived by two special friends and long-time employees, Eloy and Carolyn Gonzales. The family would like to extend a very special thanks to two very special ladies who were given special gifts and talents that only the Lord could give to be care-givers for Walter, Virginia Maginness and Chris Moreno, Their light shines bright.
A memorial service for Walter will be at Johnson’s Funeral Home on Thursday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m.
