

He grew up in the Piney Woods of East Texas, graduating from Chester HS in 1948 and Sam Houston State Teachers' College in 1951. He taught in Corrigan for a year, prior to joining the USAF in 1952. He met his future bride on Valentine's Day at First Baptist Church (FBC) El Paso. They married on June 25, 1955. They were stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas; Tokyo Japan; Washington DC; Madrid Spain; and San Antonio, where they retired. While in Japan he & Mary were founding members of FBC Tokyo. In 1972, the family joined First Baptist Church San Antonio, where he was a Life Deacon and active on many committees. Upon military retirement, he taught in North East ISD, 20 of those years at Lee High School where he taught and mentored many students, helping them stay in school, graduate, and find employment. He was a member of Corrigan Masonic Lodge and Life Endowed Member of the San Antonio Consistory of the Scottish Right.
His passion for gardening was evident by the numerous yard awards he won. He and Mary traveled extensively, their favorite destination being Hawaii. His love and pride of his children and grandchildren was known by all who knew him. Most Friday nights for over 30 years, he and Mary could be found with their 'domino group' laughing, playing, and eating.
Acie is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Durham Barfield; brothers AJ and Curtis Barfield; sister Claudine Griswold, and their parents. Survived by their children Beth Powell and Bruce Barfield, grandchildren Morgan and Graham, his twin brother Harold Barfield of Livingston, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of his Life will be May 7th at 12:00 pm at First Baptist Church San Antonio, 515 McCullough Ave. with Rev. Don Guthrie officiating.
