

He leaves behind his wife of 14 years, Olive (Moeller) Maas. Mr. Maas is also survived by brothers Arthur(Alice)Maas, Edward(Marian)Maas, and sisters Mildred(Maas)Arends, Marcella(Maas)Johnson; sons David(Julie)Maas, Edwin(Gracia)Maas, Warren(Ann)Maas, and Paul(Julie)Maas; stepsons Vernon(Ann)Moeller and Conrad Moeller; grandchildren Eric Maas, Aaron Maas, Laura TerWisscha, Amy West, Heidi(Maas)Ernst, Andrew Maas, Keith Maas, Rebekah(Maas)Banks, Bethany(Maas)Sewald, Kristine(Maas)Crenshaw, Jonathan Maas, Sarah(Maas)Spinner, Jennifer Swanson, Molly Swanson and Sally Swanson, Matthew Moeller, and Jeffrey Moeller; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Mr. Maas is predeceased by his first wife of 53 years, Marie (Hansen) Maas, mother of his four sons, his brother Erwin Maas, his sisters Marjorie (Maas) Schmiesing, and Ruth(Maas)Tuttle, and grandson Michael Maas.
Born and raised in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County, MN, he was the son of Franz Wilhelm Julius and Martha L.J. (Wandersee) Maas. After serving with the United States Army as a corporal in World War II on the European Front in France, Netherlands, and Germany, Mr. Maas attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with high distinction with a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Business Administration in 1941 and receiving recognition in the Honor Society of Agriculture. In 1942 he had the opportunity to join the Green Giant Company in LeSueur as a statistician, then as the Director of Operations, and finally the Company Economist. In the late 1950’s, after his team developed a new distribution model, he was recognized and commended by Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson. Mr. Maas served in musical organizations playing violin, including the Mankato Symphony Orchestra, the 3-M Orchestra, the Salterelli Strings of San Antonio, and numerous jam sessions in the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio. He was an active member of the Gideons, a member of Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church, and a life member of VFW Post #8541.
A viewing will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Sunset Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2:00PM at Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church in San Antonio, and at Johnsonville Trinity Lutheran Church in Minnesota. A private burial will follow.
