Born on October 24, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, Alejandro was the son of Rodrigo Vargas Sr. and Maria Ester Bertetti-Vargas. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Bea, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, faith, and family, raising four children who were his greatest pride and joy.
A proud graduate of Louis W. Fox High School, Class of 1955, Alejandro went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force. Following active duty, he continued his commitment to service in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1986. In 1959, he began what would become a remarkable 30-year career with the San Antonio Fire Department. There, he served as an academy instructor, paramedic, and mentor to countless colleagues, ultimately achieving the rank of Fire Captain, a role that reflected both his leadership and deep sense of duty to his community.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alejandro’s true legacy was his devotion to family. He was a constant source of support and encouragement, especially when it came to his children’s school events and sports, and he found great joy in family dinners, movie nights, and summer vacations that brought everyone together.
A lifelong student of history and family heritage, Alejandro loved sharing stories of the past, ensuring that the lessons and traditions of earlier generations would live on. In retirement, he and Bea enjoyed life’s quiet blessings: morning coffee together, time in their garden, peaceful walks, and evenings on their porch reflecting on a life well-lived. His kindness was steady and genuine, extended freely to family, friends, and neighbors alike.
Alejandro was preceded in death by his parents, Rodrigo Sr. and Maria Ester; his brothers Rudy, Roy, and Rodrigo Jr.; and his sisters Beatrice Prado and Maria Ester Vargas.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Bea; his children, Alejandro Vargas Jr. (Lisa), Dolly Stevens (Nat), Daniel Vargas (Janice), and Maria Klaus (Robert); eight cherished grandchildren; five adored great-grandchildren; and a large extended family who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
