

Alfonso Chavez, age 86, of San Antonio died Thursday, April 3, 2008. He was born October 30, 1921 in San Antonio, the son of Rosalio Chavez and Margarita Gutierrez Chavez. Alfonso was a member of St. Phillip of Jesus Catholic Church. Mr. Chavez and his wife Lucy were very active in their parish, participating in the Parish Council; School PTA; Parish Youth Council; Parish Festival Committee and the Men's Club. He retired from WR Dallas Furniture Company after 40 years of service as a cabinet maker; his love of wood working was more than a hobby. Mr. Chavez was very proud of serving in the Army Air Corps with the 15th Air Force, during World War II. He flew over 50 bombing missions out of Africa and Italy as a waist gunner in the B-17's during the European Theater. Alfonso is preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Magdaleno Chavez; daughter, Stella Chavez Ruiz; siblings, Phillip G. Chavez, Raymond G. Chavez, Antonia Rodriguez, Albert Chavez, and Rosalio Chavez, Jr. He is survived by daughters, Sylvia Rendon of San Antonio, Gloria Vincent and husband John of San Antonio; son A. William "Bill" Chavez and wife Janice of New Jersey; son-in-law, Ignacio Ruiz and wife Glenda of Hewitt, TX; brothers and sister, Antonio Chavez, Mary Garza, Gregorio Chavez and Robert Chavez; grandchildren, Maj. Thomas Rendon, III and wife Denise of Barksdale AFB, LA, Tina Marti and husband Luis of San Antonio, John A. Vincent, IV of Bettandorf, IA, James A. Vincent and wife Rose Mary of San Antonio, Joseph A. Vincent of Round Rock, TX, Michael A. Ruiz and wife Sybil of Katy, TX, Sara E. Ruiz of Dallas, TX, Angela D. Brownell and husband Buddy of North Pole, Alaska; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and Godchildren. The family appreciates and is grateful for the care given by Dr. Paul Garcia, VITAS Hospice and Homewood at Castle Hills.
