Alice G. Mendez

Alice G. Mendez, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Alice was 90 years old at the time of her passing. She was born on June 1, 1932, in San Marcos, Texas, to parents, Domingo Garcia and Angelina Ogden Garcia. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Arturo Garcia and Armando “Guero” Garcia. Alice is survived by her husband of 63 years, Pedro “Pete” Mendez; daughter, Becky Saenz, her husband Dr. Paul Saenz; son, Gerald Mendez and his wife Laura Mendez; grandsons, Nicholas, Stephen, and Jeffrey Saenz and Isaac, Javier and Luke Mendez; great grandchildren include Benjamin and Lucia Saenz.

Early in her career, Alice worked as a secretary at an Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas. After marriage and children, she began to work as a Teacher’s Aide at several different elementary schools including Steel, Forbes and Howard Elementaries. She later worked as the Attendance Clerk at Wheatley (Brackenridge) High School. Alice took great pride in her home and was an excellent hostess. She enjoyed having company and treating them with impeccable hospitality. Alice also enjoyed watching sports and was a faithful San Antonio Spurs fan, but she was an even bigger Notre Dame football devotee. She tolerated the Cowboys and enjoyed watching the Texas Rangers. She became a Florida Gators softball fan when she found out a distant relative played shortstop for the team. She loved spending time with her grandsons and was proud of all of them. She also enjoyed the time she spent with her great grandchildren.Alice was a devout Catholic and we, her family, believe she is exactly where she worked her entire life to be. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

Fr. Kevin Shanahan will officiate. Interment will follow in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.
