Alicia Garza, age 94, passed away with her family at her bedside on Friday, January 7, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in Alamo, Texas to Reyes and Getrudis "Tules" Uresti. Alicia lived and worked on the family farm in South Texas with a blended family that totaled 15 children; she was the oldest of 10 in the second family. She married the love of her life, Homero Remedios L. Garza, upon his return after 3 years in the Army overseas during WW II. As a military wife, she responsibly managed the family during year-long deployments of her husband. During his military service, they lived with their children in France, spent time in Spain and traveled Europe. As a devout Catholic, Alicia was a member of St. Matthews Guadulapanas and sang in the Spanish Language Choir. Alicia and Homero were great believers in the value of higher education as an important pathway to success. She was very involved in the Parent Teacher Association and encouraged her children to participate in extracurricular activities. All her children attended college: two went on to receive degrees from Harvard and three received advanced graduate degrees. Later in life, Alicia earned her own degree at SAC and Our Lady of the Lake University. Alicia treasured her time as a teacher. As a school girl she played sports and became a fan of all sports but she was a "FANatic FAN" of the Cowboys and the Spurs. She was a great American and a proud Texan and believed strongly in the American Dream. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband; her son, Humberto "Bert" J. Garza; her son-in-law Al Martinez and all 14 siblings. Alicia is survived by her three children: Homero R. Garza, MD (Judge Sandee Marion), Cora Martinez, Maria Groussman (Dean), daughter-in-law, Vira S. Garza and her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The Family wishes to thank Dr. Ramon Reyes and his staff for their consummate, professional and compassionate care of our mother. The family also wishes to thank Mrs. Otilia Baban plus the staff of Elara Home Care for their care of our mother.
