

His Dad was a farmer in the area around Dimmitt, Texas and grew corn, wheat, and soybeans. Andy grew up working on the farm with his younger siblings, brothers Bill and David, and sister Mary. Andy attended Elementary School in a one room schoolhouse that served the farmers’ families, and High School in Springlake, TX where he drove a school bus. He attended Texas Tech University where he played football for one year and got his undergraduate degree in plant and soil science. During his time at Tech, he met Wanda (Kitten) Mills and was married in 1950. Andy and Kitten were married for 66 years until she passed away in 2016.
After college, Andy was an officer in the Air Force achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1952 he served as a transportation officer stationed in Tripoli, Libya. While there, Kitten taught fifth grade to children on the base. When they returned to the United States they lived in Morton, Lubbock, and Amarillo while Andy began his 30-year career with Travelers Insurance. In 1955 the couple had a son, Michael Andrew. In 1966 they moved to San Antonio, and in 1970 had a daughter, Kristin Lea. Andy retired from Travelers in 1984 and began a second career in the trust department with Frost Bank, and worked there until 2008.
The Behrends family is part of the original membership of the Northside Church of Christ in San Antonio, which began in 1977, and they were
faithful members for almost 50 years. Andy served as an elder from 1985-2010 and he continued serve this church that he loved.
Andy enjoyed vacationing in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico and reading Westerns, especially by Louis Lamour. Most of all Andy loved his family, his God, and helping people any way that he could. Andy is survived by his brother David (Jane) and his sister Mary; his son Mike (Katie), their three children, nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren and daughter Kristin Ward (Steven), and their two children. Andy leaves a lasting legacy of kindness, friendship, service, patience, and faithfulness to his family and all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Northside Foundation through the Northside Church of Christ.
A celebration of Andy’s life will be Saturday, February 15, 2:00 pm, at Northside Church of Christ, 19818 US HWY 281 N, San Antonio, TX.
